Discipline: Yes an ‘Evil’ D Word

Half of life is luck; the other half is discipline - and that’s the important half, for without discipline you wouldn’t know what to do with luck.

  Carl Zuckmeyer

It’s Friday again and it’s time for my first D contribution for the Pagan Blog Project. You can Visit all the other D blogs for this week Here.

This week I once again wanted to talk about one of the Nine Noble Virtues that are expressed in some forms of Heathenry. This time we’re talking about Discipline. Even if all the Nine Nobel Virtues aren’t held up word for word by all Heathens the principles behind them I have only ever seen as well received.

Previously I talked about Courage: It’s for Everyone, if you didn’t see it or what more of an intro to the Nine Noble Virtues you can find it there.

When I’m talking about discipline here I’m talking about self discipline. This isn’t about the type of discipline you as a parent use with your children or your own parents used with you. First though we need to define it.

What is Discipline First

discipline

Merriam-Webster.com

What I’m discussing is related to #6 in that it’s we’re looking at self appointed rules that we have determined to follow ourselves. These rules can apply to many things such as:

  • Physical Routines likes exercise
  • Household Routines like cleaning
  • Spiritual Routines like regular meditation
  • Social Routine like participating in the Pagan Blog Project

Discipline is something we all shy away from at one point or another because well It’s Hard.

Why is Discipline so Important

Nothing is more harmful to the service, than the neglect of discipline; for that discipline, more than numbers, gives one army superiority over another.

George Washington

Discipline is what keeps us doing routines even on the days we don’t want to. It also is what stands one person out from another in the view of their friends, family and the Gods.

For every person who vows to a Year and a Day, a specified time of study, to join a degree program or vow to complete any goal. Discipline is what allows each of us to reach those goals.

What Could We Each Achieve Through Discipline

None of us is perfect and some people just appear more disciplined then others. Think about some of your current goals and what it will take to meet them.

For myself my two largest Goals are the success of Treegold & Beegold, both as the blog and Etsy Shop. I plan to do this by being disciplined in continuing to provide high quality content through the blog and products at the shlp.

My other big goal is getting back into the workforce and as a High School teacher. I’m currently taking classes to earn my Professional Teacher’s Certificate. I hope to fulfill this one pretty soon.

What major goals in your life right now are you doing that involve acts of discipline? Are you a student of some sort, are you starting a new business venture? Do you have a large personal goal like healthy eating and exercise?

Please share in the comments and pass along the word to others.

  1. Discipline - the one thing I'd love to have... I've just started doing my PhD, and while my professor provides a lot of support, most of the work has to be structured and planned by myself. And I'm really not good at planning way ahead, and actually sitting down and doing routine stuff everyday.
But since the PBP has made me start with (more or less) regular devotions, I'm hoping that I'll find this discipline in other areas of my life, as well.

    1. Getting to the point of going for a PhD takes discipline! But I do understand there is a world of difference from Master's work to PhD work.

Good luck on your endeavors and from things I've read the best way is to add small routines and build upon them. If done that way they are supposed to stick well.

  4. Indeed, discipline is needed to achieve our goals. The major goal I am having to seriously apply discipline to is blogging at least once a day. It's a good thing I have 5 different blogs to use, and multiple committed weekly postings throughout.

I wish us both the luck, discipline and determination needed to reach our goals.
