I am completely in love with these sock critters. The Sweetheart Sheep was adorable but a bit difficult. I wanted to do a much simpler one that was still in tune of spring.
This time we have a Cute Spring Chick!
He only involves hand stitching and took me about 30 minutes including pictures.
What I Need
- A child’s Yellow Sock (I searched my kid’s to no avail but found a 3 pack at the Dollar Store).
- Orange Felt
- Orange & Yellow Embroidery Floss
- Black Puffy Paint Or Black Felt
- PDF Pattern for Feet and Beak
What to Do
I first took the yellow sock and cut it just before the heel.
I then stuffed the sock.
Next I just stitched up the end. It didn’t need to be pretty because this is going to be hidden in a later step.
Print out the PDF Pattern for the Feet and Beak.
Cut out 2 of the feet in orange felt.
Cut out 4 of the feet in orange felt.
Stitch the 2 feet together using a simple running stitch with the orange embroidery floss
Stitch 2 of the beak pieces together using a running stitch. Repeat for the other 2 beak pieces.
Now stitch the 2 beak pieces together along one side. This will make the beak.
Stitch the beak onto the stuff sock.
Stitch the feet onto the bottom of the sock. Make sure to cover up the seam.
Using the yellow embroidery floss stitch little wings onto each side. Just make a “U” shape.
Originally I was going to sew on felt circles for the eye. I decided last minute that fabric paint would me much easier.
And he is complete!
If anyone else makes one I’d love to see him. Check out and join our Flickr Group where everyone can share their creations. It’s still pretty new so if you use Flickr please join in.
